My Question is about innovation in advertisement of a retail cloth shop ?

March 1, 2010 - 11:32 am 2 Comments

I’m a businessman. I opened my shop before 3 months. I want to promote my shop so that new customers will come to my shop. As Variety in my shop is more than any other shop in city and prices are very less in comparison to others. Please suggest me some new way of advertising.

Mithesh

First of all congratulations on starting your own business. It must feel wonderful to be your own boss….

Now as far as promoting your retail cloth shop, first of all do a detailed market survey & dont forget to involve all your friends & family in this exercise :)

1. I do not know which city you live in, but ask all your friends & fly to visit all the large & small retail units in your city. They should also go to huge enterprises such as shopper stop or similar such retail gaints.
2. Ask them to rate these shops in terms of the first impression, ambiance, the user friendliness of the staff, the quality of products, price, the discounts, the variety, other recreational facilities (play areas for kids, need not b big, just a black board in one corner with different coloured chalks for them to draw)
3. Now see which shops rate the best and why.
4. Once you get the why, see where ur shop rates next to it.
5. Try to use the best points and promote these in your shop.

Giving an advertisment is important, but more important is to identify a USP (Unique Selling Proposition) for your shop. That means, what makes your shop different from others.

Once you find your USP, then address each segment of customers differently
For Eg:
1. Housewives: Take picture so all the latest products for adults & children in your shop, make a small booklet and distribute it free to all the residential areas near your shop.
2. College Students – Stick a lot of "DO YOU KNOW" posters around colleges (do you know the latest trend in fashion: Angelina Jolie seen wearing ________ then show pictures of collection of cloths you have in similar fashion)
3. Office Wear
4. Formal Wear
You can create your own advertisements for each of these which will invariable showcase the variety you have at the same time target traffic into your shop.

Since you seem internet savvy, why dont you promote your shop through the net. Create your own blog or group on yahoo and encourage all your customers to become members in this group. Write information or put articles on fashion (easily available on the net) and have competitions, where if school, college children give some interesting write ups on fashion you can give a discount to your shop.

The most important thing is to know your strengths and highlight those strenghts.

All the best!!

Needed advice for small retail clothing shop. How can I get the customer to focus on clothing vs price?

February 25, 2010 - 9:21 am 1 Comment

I would like to have the customer to focus on clothing in shop and not price only. We have price tags on stock dresses. Customers are also able to special order in another size. We are a small boutique with large competitors in our area. We do not have the volume as others and the advertising budget. We are battling problems what we should set our margin at.

First, do you have a niche? Does you store offer clothing that consumers will not be able to find, or find good replicas of, in the large compeditor stores? That is what you need to focus on when ordering supply. Make sure either the product you offer or the method of offering is unique and cannot be duplicated in the large department store. The rest can be handled by cleaver marketing.

Marketing: If you have a store front window, keep it changing regularly – at least once a week. This helps you from blending in and is like free advertisement. Don’t look the same every day out of the year. Once a month (or every two months) place a whole bunch of balloons outside and celebrate something…… arrival of a new clothing line, back-to-school specials, customer appriciation week…..
This is ture for in-store decor also. Keep clothing rotating, so that a rack I may not have seen in the back of the store on my last visit seems like new merchandise on my second visit. Keep clothing on displays and manikins constantly changing. Change displays to change with the season. This creates interest and intrigue.

Make sure signage is visable in the store that indicates you can special order sizes.

Incentive to return: There are a couple local shops that I use, even though they are more expensive, because they have a frequent shopper card. It gets punched everytime I spend $20 (which is easy to do) and after 15 or 20 puches I get $20 off next purchase.

Incentive to referr: The place where my mother works offers a coupon to paying customers. On one side the customer writes his name and address then gives it to a friend. The friend brings in the coupon and presents it to the clerk upon paying for an item purchased (over $X amount) then the original customer (whose name is on the coupon) is send a thank you for referring your friend to use note along with a generous coupon to use on their next visit – like 50% off one item under $x.00.

Lastly, is the experience in your store unique? Are customer warmly greeted at the door? Does staff try to learn frequent customer’s name and use the name when greeted/conducting business? Is staff attentitive to customer when trying on clothing (offer to exchange sizes, colors, or assist customer)? Are mints out on the counter? Is a drink refressment offered – particularly on hot and cold days? (People always linger longer when there is food available.)

As for margins, be confident enough in your product (or order product that you can be confident in) that you set a price that makes you the profit you need to keep the store running without feeling like you have to compromise on the price. I guess what I’m trying to say is, be confident in your product (and instill this confidence in your employees) and your customers will be confident in buying it, no matter the price.

Best wishes.

If i wanted to start a small retail shop how would I go about it?

February 23, 2010 - 9:02 am 2 Comments

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you’re interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you’ll inevitably have as well as many you haven’t anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Start and Run a Profitable Retail Business by Jim Dion, Ted Topping
* Retail Business Kit for Dummies by Rick Segel
* Specialty Shop Retailing: How to Run Your Own Store Revised by Carol L. Schroeder
* So You Want To Own The Store: Secrets to Running a Successful Retail Operation by Mort Brown

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

I would like to start a small retail gift shop out of my home. Any advice or laws I should know?

February 21, 2010 - 10:33 am 2 Comments

It would be a small shop out in my porch. A craft or custom paintings .
I am a little leary because of all the laws and would like to hear from someone who has this type of shop.
I am in South Dakota.
I know about sales tax lic. ,etc.
Any feedback will help me make up my mind.

Check into local zoning restrictions as it may be illegal to open a retail shop in a residential area.Good luck.
